Ultimate Writing & Creativity Center

Since software programs are not linear in nature, the task of evaluating them becomes difficult. In my evaluation, I will try to tackle the four major areas defined by Hubbard (2006): Technological Features, Activities, Teacher Fit and Learner Fit.

Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center is software designed to encourage young learners to develop their writing skills. It helps students go through the writing process with a creative and enthusiastic approach. The program takes students through all the stages of the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, editing and presenting. It includes eight tutorials that help them familiarize themselves with the four major sections of the program: the Writing Ideas, the Picture Place, the Presentation Theatre and the Word Processor.

The technological features of the program are quite acceptable for its purpose. The program takes a couple of seconds to load on the computer. It runs at a reasonable speed. It can be installed on either Windows or Macintosh operating system. During the period I used the program, I experienced neither crashes nor stalls. The interface of the program is consistent and user friendly. Navigation within the different sections of the program is easy. At any stage the user can click on Penny, the help provider, for instructions or help. In general, the program is highly animated and makes use of all the computer potentials by integrating the use of the audio, video and typed text features. It also saves the students’ records. This feature helps them access their work whenever they want and make them feel that their work is valuable.

Upon investigating the activities that the program provides, it was found that once the learners begin to use the program, they are introduced to Penny, the help provider. Penny is an animated interactive character that answers questions and gives instructions. At any point, the students can click penny for help. They are firstly required to sign in (have a record) to be able to use the program (see figure 1). By having a record, the students get their own “school bag” where all the work is kept and can be accessed afterwards.

Getting started

After this, Penny either takes the students in a tour to introduce him to the four major sections of the Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center: The Writing Ideas, the Picture Place, the Presentation Theatre and the Word Processor or inform them more about the different stages of the writing process. The software successfully caters for different learning styles. The instructions given by Penny are both audio and typed. (See figure 2)

The first section, Writing Ideas, functions as a bank of ideas for students. In this section, there are four thematic locations: the Rain Forest, the Desert, the Outer Space, and the Ocean. In each of these locations, there are many hotspots that students can click to get ideas about one of the themes and start writing. Theses hotspots are sometimes animals or fish or even astronauts, depending on the theme of the location. The students get to acquire new vocabulary and general knowledge information from these themes. They can either save the ideas they get to the red notebook by clicking the notebook icon at the bottom of the page or start writing by clicking word processor icon. (See figure 3)

In each of these locations, there are Did You Know and Writing Projects tabs that provide the learner with more ideas. The suggested writing ideas and activities include writing new stories, poems, songs, riddles, jokes, recipes and personalized lists. The students are always introduced to an example before being asked to write in one of these genres. This variety of activities allows the students to be exposed to authentic language such as the language of jokes and riddles. It is also worth mention that presence of Penny to provide help at any stage makes students work in an anxiety free environment as they have become sure that they will find help if needed. (See Figure 4)

In the Picture Place section, students can use any of the pictures provided as a background to the writing tasks which promotes creativity. Students can also include pictures, clip arts, music, and sounds in their writing assignments. In order to start writing, they have to go to the Word Processor. This can be done either by clicking on the paper and pencil icon from any of the locations or by clicking on the new blank paper from the main menu. (See figure 5)

In the Word Processor, the students can access their notebook to choose an idea to start writing about. This section of the program resembles the MS Word application, in the sense that the students can type, edit and incorporate graphics in their writing assignments. The Word Processor gives the students the opportunity to check the spelling and use the dictionary and the thesaurus which they can access from the Word Processor Tools. (See figure 6)

Finally, students can choose to present the assignments in an interactive and interesting way by choosing to purplish them through the Presentation Theatre. One important feature of the Presentation Theatre is that it allows the learners to listen to what they have previously typed. They listen to the correct pronunciation which enhances their pronunciation skills.

As far as the Teacher Fit element is concerned, the program demonstrates sound pedagogical content and organization. The methodology underlying the program is the Constructivist teaching methodology. The program is interactive and it caters for various learning styles. It addresses visual, auditory, reading/ writing and tactile learners. It enhances independent learning and allows the students to experiment with their writing skills. The program is meant to be student centered, in the sense that students are given tips and they are left to act upon them. They learn by going through a tutorial and then they are left to experiment and try. The focus of the program is definitely on the productive skill of writing.

Though this software is not very communicative, in the sense that communication is only between the learner and Penny, the program is accompanied by a printed Teacher Guide and Student’s Activity Guide that can help in making it more communicative through implementing group and pair work.

From a Learner’s Fit aspect, the software design is very lively and colorful. The animation factor appeals to most young learners and can even motivate them. The software is, in fact, designed for young learners from 6 to 10 years. However, I believe that this can only be suitable for native speakers or learners in an ESL context. In an EFL context, the level of the language used and the skills addressed would be advanced for learners of that age. The software can be adapted to fit older learners like preparatory or secondary students or even young college students of a less advanced level.

Students using this software have complete control over the learning process. They are the ones who decide which stage of writing they want to practice and when they want to do that. This promotes learner autonomy. The software is user- friendly and navigation through the different sections is easy. Students can go to any of its four sections with a click of the mouse. The software also enables students to develop self confidence as writers by seeing their own improvement and achievements. The software demonstrates no cultural or ethnic bias.

One drawback of this program is the lack of feedback. Students go through the process of writing and they are given no feedback on their performance, except if they used the spelling checker which gives feedback on spelling only. The spelling checker itself is not that powerful tool since young learners may not know the correct spelling of a word in order to be able choose it from a dropdown list.

However, I believe that this lack of feedback can be of great use for the teacher. In fact, it promotes the role of the teacher. The teacher’s role in a class, where the Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center is being used, is to give formative feedback. The teacher can even encourage students to give peer feedback to one another sustaining that anxiety free learning environment. Engaging the students in the process of giving and receiving feedback can boost their egos and help them develop their writing and speaking skills.

The teacher can also encourage students to work in groups when writing stories or riddles which can make the learning process more communicative and interesting. The teacher can assign the students different activities. They can be encouraged to use the Presentation Theatre feature to give group presentations after they rehearse and listen to the correct pronunciation. The teacher can play the role of the facilitator in this stage.

In conclusion, the program can be incorporated in writing classes provided the teacher plays an effective role in the process by engaging the students in different activities including individual, pair and group work. Promoting the writing skills of students is every teacher’s challenging goal and the Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center can help student be motivated an enthusiastic towards the writing process. Finally, it is important to keep in consideration what Burston (2003) mentioned about using technology to serve pedagogy and not the opposite in order to attain pedagogical learning objectives.
