- Fortieth, Pauri of Anand Sahib followed by the last two slokas in Sru Guru Granth Sahib – Mundavani (muMdwvxI) and the Slok Mahala 5, ending “qnu mnu QIvY hirAw 1”. Originally and up to the time of the first six Gurus, this evening prayer was limited to the recitation of only the nine shabads.
- Pauri 6 Overview The sixth pauri is accompanied by two saloks. The first salok is comprised of fourteen lines and the second is comprised of ten. The first salok discusses ritual practices of Muslims, Hindus, Yogis, philanthropists, perverse individuals, etc., and then reaffirms Guru Granth Sahib’s principle in the last two lines.
With the blessing from ‘The Sat’, I share with you what I understand from the 14th Pauri of Anand Sahib. Bgqw kI cwl inrwlI bh agtaa kee chaal niraalee. The way the devotees live their life is distinct. My understanding: Guru Sahib tells me that the life of the devotee is different from that of an ordinary individual.
Saacẖee livai bin ḏeh nimaaṇī.
Without being absorbed in this, the body is destitute.
ਦੇਹ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਲਿਵੈ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵੇਚਾਰੀਆ ॥
देह निमाणी लिवै बाझहु किआ करे वेचारीआ ॥

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਮਰਥ ਕੋਇ ਨਾਹੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਬਨਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
तुधु बाझु समरथ कोइ नाही क्रिपा करि बनवारीआ ॥

ਏਸ ਨਉ ਹੋਰੁ ਥਾਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
एस नउ होरु थाउ नाही सबदि लागि सवारीआ ॥
Ės nao hor thaao naahī sabaḏ laag savaariyaa.
There is no place other than this appearing name; there is adornment on being affixed to the word primal.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਿਵੈ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵੇਚਾਰੀਆ ॥੬॥
कहै नानकु लिवै बाझहु किआ करे वेचारीआ ॥६॥
Kahai Nānak livai baajẖahu kiya kare vecẖaariyaa. ||6||

Says Nanak, without being absorbed in this, what can be done by the pitiable? ||6||
In this stanza (pauri) the Guru illuminates that the body is miserable, stressed or rather destitute when there is no absorption in the existent, that which is. (As mentioned earlier ‘Sach’ or ‘Sat’ imply that which is, being, existent and appearing as this appearance). In the next line the guru questions what exactly can be done by the unfortunate, but quickly adds that the custodian of nature alone is capable of bestowing mercy for there to be an absorption (implying personal endeavour cannot beget this absorption). He goes on to add that there is no place beyond this appearing presence and there is adornment on being attached to the word (shabad).
